Ugandan Government Takes Firm Stance Against Religious Defiance in Census

The Ugandan government has demonstrated a firm stance against religious defiance in the conduct of the National Housing and Population Census 2024. The arrest and remand of Navers Veran, a self-styled ‘Jesus,’ and his follower, Erishani Day Gresher, for obstructing census enumerators, highlight the government’s commitment to the successful completion of the census.

The incident in Luweero District underscores the government’s position that while religious freedoms are respected, they do not exempt individuals from participating in national programs that are essential for the public good. The prosecution of Veran and Gresher sends a clear message that acts of defiance will be met with legal consequences.

The government’s approach reflects a balance between upholding constitutional rights and ensuring the effectiveness of government initiatives. As the case proceeds, it will serve as a precedent for handling similar conflicts between religious beliefs and civic responsibilities
