Ugandan Ministers Feel the Heat: President Museveni’s Cabinet Changes Imminent

Ugandan Ministers Brace for Impending Cabinet Reshuffle by President Museveni

As President Museveni finalizes his new Cabinet, Ugandan Ministers find themselves on edge. The recent absence of Museveni from a critical Cabinet meeting at State House Entebbe has stirred speculation within government circles about an imminent shake-up. Sources reveal that Museveni’s absence, a rare occurrence during the routine Monday morning Cabinet session, has fueled rumors of significant changes on the horizon.

In response to mounting speculation, Farouk Kirunda, President Museveni’s deputy spokesperson, has called for calm, assuring the public that any Cabinet reshuffle will be formally communicated. Meanwhile, Ministers are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to retain their positions, with reports of intense lobbying, personal appeals to the President, and leveraging of influential connections.

The government is gearing up to introduce Bills aimed at streamlining agencies across crucial sectors like Education, Internal Affairs, Natural Resources and Environment, and Works and Transport. This restructuring is expected to create opportunities for fresh faces in the Cabinet.

Recent reports of a leaked list containing potential new Cabinet appointees, including military personnel, have added to the unease within State House. However, the list was reportedly withdrawn by President Museveni for undisclosed reasons, further fueling speculation.

With President Museveni signaling intentions for Cabinet changes since late December 2023, anxiety is palpable among Ministers, especially with the 2026 elections looming ahead.

Political circles are rife with speculation that Museveni is awaiting the passage of Bills by Parliament before unveiling his new Cabinet. Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja recently announced plans to table Bills aimed at rationalizing agencies across various sectors.
