Private Rocket to Launch Historic Moon Landing Attempt with Astrobotic’s Peregrine Lander

In a historic endeavor, the United States is set to launch its first private spacecraft on a mission to land on the Moon in over half a century. United Launch Alliance’s (ULA) Vulcan Centaur rocket is scheduled to lift off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station at 2:18 a.m. (7:18 GMT) on Monday, carrying Astrobotic’s Peregrine Lunar Lander.

The mission aims to achieve a controlled landing on the Moon’s mid-latitude region, Sinus Viscositatis, or the Bay of Stickiness, on February 23. Astrobotic, based in Pittsburgh, sees this as a significant moment, leading the return to the Moon’s surface for the first time since the Apollo missions.

The Peregrine Lunar Lander carries scientific instruments to study radiation and surface composition, contributing to the preparation for future human missions. This private initiative is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, aiming to stimulate a broader lunar economy and reduce the cost of lunar exploration.

NASA, under CLPS, has contracted Astrobotic for more than $100 million for the mission, showcasing the agency’s collaboration with the commercial sector. Joel Kearns, NASA’s deputy associate administrator for exploration, notes that leveraging private companies can lead to more cost-effective and rapidly accomplished lunar trips, aligning with NASA’s Artemis program to return astronauts to the Moon later this decade.

The Vulcan Centaur rocket represents a milestone for ULA, introducing reusable first-stage booster engines, anticipating cost savings in future launches. While private missions to the Moon have faced challenges, including landing failures, ULA emphasizes its track record of over 150 successful launches.

The Peregrine’s cargo includes a rover from Carnegie Mellon University, a physical Bitcoin, and even cremated remains and DNA, including those of Gene Roddenberry and Arthur C. Clarke. Controversy surrounds the inclusion of such celestial cargo, especially with objections from the Navajo Nation, citing concerns about desecrating sacred bodies.

As the private spacecraft embarks on this historic lunar mission, it marks a crucial step in the evolution of space exploration, where private industry plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of lunar and celestial endeavors.
