A Pass vs. Local Websites: The Fight for Fair Compensation

In 2021, A Pass, a popular dancehall artist, took a firm stand against local websites that profited from distributing songs by local musicians without compensating them. He made it clear that his issue was specifically with these websites, not with local radio stations, TV channels, or DJs. A Pass argued that these platforms hindered his fans from supporting him through legitimate streaming services like Spotify and iTunes, where they could purchase his music.

Despite his previous stance, A Pass recently released a comprehensive 42-track album under his name. However, his music quickly found its way onto a local website known for promoting homegrown talent. Even though the site praised tracks such as “True Story” for their exceptional quality, A Pass swiftly demanded that his music and name be removed from their platform. He accused them of unauthorized distribution and asserted his rights as an artist.

This recent incident echoes A Pass’s earlier confrontation with online platforms in 2021. During that time, fellow artist GNL Zamba stood in solidarity with him, advocating for direct payment for their creative endeavors. However, GNL Zamba acknowledged the repercussions of this approach, noting that some media outlets associated with these websites ceased to play his music and excluded him from award nominations.
