Dozens Killed, Thousands Displaced as Torrential Rains Submerge Mexico’s Gulf and Central Regions

Dozens are dead and thousands displaced in Mexico after days of torrential rain caused rivers to overflow, submerging towns across the country’s central and Gulf regions. At least 66 people have been confirmed dead, and 75 remain missing.

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced emergency aid and mobilized thousands of troops for rescue missions, but locals in hard-hit areas such as Poza Rica say government help came too late. Streets are buried in mud, businesses destroyed, and families continue searching for missing relatives.

Meteorologists attribute the disaster to the collision of tropical systems and unusually warm ocean waters, while climate experts warn that extreme flooding like this will likely intensify as the planet heats up.
