Renowned Ugandan Scientist Dr. Clet Wandui Masiga has been appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Research, Innovation, and Development in the Inzu Ya Masaaba Kingdom. His appointment, announced in the Cabinet list on January 29, 2024, marks a significant win for the Bugisu Sub-region, covering six districts in Uganda and extending to Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties in Kenya, as well as the entire Elgon region.

Dr. Masiga, the Executive Director of Tropical Institute of Development Innovations (TRIDI) and a globally celebrated scientist, holds a BSc in Forestry, a Master of Science from the University of Birmingham, and a Ph.D. in Genetics and Breeding/Biotechnology from Sudan Academy of Sciences. With extensive research experience and expertise, he founded Bioscience Technology Services Ltd in the United Kingdom, focusing on the commercialization of Science Technologies for Tropical Regions.

His work spans numerous countries, managing projects related to natural resources, environment, agriculture, and rural development. Dr. Masiga is a well-published researcher and author, with notable contributions to genetics and biotechnology. He serves as the Executive Director for Access and Utilization of Bioscience Innovations and Technologies.

In his new role, Dr. Masiga aims to implement the agenda of Inzu Ya Masaaba Kingdom, focusing on promoting agricultural innovation, supporting rural capacity building, and introducing pro-poor innovations for rural social development. His vision includes establishing factories and industries in rural areas, developing mineral, oil, and gas exploration, enhancing textile and fashion engineering, and promoting tourism. Dr. Masiga emphasized the need for research and innovation facilities to address the region’s specific needs, exploit natural resources, and attract investors for sustainable development.
