The Ugandan government has issued a statement expressing its recognition of the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) order in the genocide case brought by South Africa against Israel. The statement, released by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bagiire Vincet Waiswa, affirms that Uganda’s stance aligns with the recently concluded 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
The NAM condemned the Israeli military campaign against Palestinians, specifically in the Gaza Strip, during the 19th Summit. The statement disassociates Uganda from the dissenting judgment of Judge Julia Sebutinde, emphasizing that her opinion is her own and does not reflect the official position of the Ugandan government.
The ICJ order, issued on January 26, 2024, is part of the ongoing tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and has been a subject of global attention.
